Women’s Spring Summer 2022

Designed by Deanna and Laura Fanning, the Kiko Kostadinov Women’s Spring Summer 2022 collection is an oneiric study of coastal summers past. Reminiscing on beach literature in their native Australia, from Kathy Lette’s coming-of-age tale ‘puberty blues’ to the dream-like short stories of tim winton, an image of summer as a kaleidoscope of tangible phenomena and intangible sentiment emerges. Intimacy, vulnerability and transformation are transferred through core patternmaking techniques and the inherent hybridity of garments. The idiosyncrasies and faux-pas of surf culture brush against the crisp sensation of dry cotton (clothesline fresh), saltbaked satin and the ebb and flow of sunset cliché colours.

Evoking the imperfect volumes of borrowed souvenirs and beach towels shrugged on wet skin, triple crewneck jersey dresses and tops create a draped and layered effect as whorls and ripples of space-dyed rib knit are applied to upside-down cardigans, halter ‘sleeve’ tops and cut-out silk camisoles. striped cotton and linen jacquards are cut as spiral skirts and kilt cargo pants whilst bootleg jeans are embroidered with broderie anglaise fruit. Natural denim moto jackets and board shorts unzip in soft curves as two-tone utility tailoring peels away from itself in the form of detachable rockfishing vests and martingale pocket trousers, patched military blazers and a double-breasted coat dress. snap studs and buttons combine on reversible cape coats for a flowing silhouette echoed in naïve floral chiffon palazzo pants and a matching handkerchief blouse. Like flotsam, limpet shells cling to embellished apron skirts and chokers are strung with pointed turritella shells spaced with lapis or hematite spheres.

The warped hobo ‘Trivia’ bag returns in canvas with saddle stitching and a magnetized flap, joined by a new spiral shopper in heavy polished leather. on a stacked heel, formal point trainers featuring contrasting tread details are updated as a backless mule in cracked leather or calf hair, and a suede sandal is adorned with resin jewels.
